Living on Nantucket, the beloved critically endangered North Atlantic right whale has been part of my life, as it is for all those who live on the island. So when I attended a public hearing in February 2019 for a proposed industrial offshore wind energy project I became alarmed. The enthusiasm from the attending conservation groups in the room was impressive, but there was little to no real time scientific data or studies. To make matters worse, the government permitting agencies planned on granting permission for the developers to harass the whales without penalty. I began to work with fellow conservationists, to educate and increase public awareness about industrial offshore wind’s threat to our endangered species and their habitat. Cape and Islands Wildlife Conservation Alliance is committed to protecting our fragile ecosystem and wildlife, so they will be part of my grandchildrens’ lives too.
